Smartphones vs Superphones — A Game Changer

Just when the “Smartphones” (iPhone, etc.) were becoming synonymous with being Mobile-Ready on the Internet along comes the “Superphone”. Unfortunately, as we near the third quarter of 2012, the technology-forward communication device is now the “Superphone”. Google, the company behind the Android operating system, coined the term “Superphone” back in 2010 after releasing the Nexus One. Today the term “Superphone” is usually used to describe any phone with a minimum 1GHz processor / dual-core processor, larger than average screen, HD and 4G network capabilities, and an Android operating system.

Contrary to popular belief, applying the aforementioned criteria (according to Google) the iPhone 4 and 4S do not qualify as “Superphones”. The 4th generation of the immensely popular iPhone model from Apple is the iPhone 4. However, the 4th generation phone is not the same thing as being a 4G phone with a 4G network; for confirmation, check these stats and compare:

  • 4G speeds up to 1 gigabit per second download; 500 gigabits per second upload

vs

  • 3G speeds up to 14.4 megabits per second download; 5.8 megabits per second upload

Key Features that Distinguish a Powerful “SuperPhone” from a “SmartPhone”:

SuperPhone Superstar Statistics:

  • Super Fast 4G Network
  • Capable of Running Multiple Apps Simultaneously
  • Bigger Screen
  • 720p/1080p HD Video Capabilities
  • Android OS
  • Minimum 1GHz processor / dual-core processor
  • Brands: Samsung Galaxy S II HD, Galaxy Nexus, LG Optimus, HTC Raider 4G etc

SmartPhone Inferior Facts:

  • 2G/3G network
  • Email, Internet, and App capabilities
  • Usually has more buttons
  • Smaller Screen
  • Brands: All iPhones, BlackBerry Bold 9700, etc.

Landing into consumer’s hand in late 2012 will be the subsequent adaptation of Windows Phone, dubbed Apollo. This latest Superphone will target the business users within the SuperPhone market.

Face Time: Additional Mobile Statistics
